Three Easy Layouts For Canvas Prints Above Sofa, Bed And Desk

Gallery walls on Pinterest look great, but most homeowners in Singapore want something simpler. Clean lines, easy hanging and no need for ten frames.

Here are three reliable layouts you can copy for your living room, bedroom and workspace using canvas prints.

Layout 1: Single hero above the sofa

This is the simplest and most popular arrangement.

How it works

  • One large rectangular canvas in landscape orientation

  • Centre it above your sofa

  • Bottom of the canvas sits about 15 to 25 cm above the top of the sofa back

What size to use

For a typical 2.5 to 3-seater sofa between 170 and 200 cm:

  • 90 × 60 cm if you like a more subtle look

  • 105 × 70 cm for a balanced, “designed” feel

  • 120 × 80 cm if you want a true statement piece

What photo works best

  • A wide landscape from your travels

  • A family photo with breathing space around the subjects

  • An abstract or illustration with strong shapes

Avoid very busy collages. The hero layout works better with one clear subject.

Layout 2: Triptych over the bed

A triptych means one image split into three canvases, or three related images hung side by side.

How it works

  • Three canvases in a row, all the same size

  • Hang them 5 to 8 cm apart

  • Centred over the headboard

Recommended sizes

For queen or king beds:

  • Three pieces of 45 × 30 cm

  • Or three pieces of 60 × 40 cm if you have a wide bedroom wall

You can use either landscape or portrait orientation. Landscape feels calmer. Portrait gives more vertical energy.

Photo ideas

  • Panoramic seascape or skyline split into three

  • Three portraits of your children, one per canvas

  • A sequence of abstract or nature details in the same colour family

Layout 3: Vertical pair beside a desk or console

This layout is perfect when you have a narrow sliver of wall space in a study, entryway or dining area.

How it works

  • Two canvases in a vertical line

  • Same width, same size

  • Bottom canvas at eye level when seated or standing, depending on location

Recommended sizes

  • Two pieces of 40 × 40 cm for a compact grid

  • Two pieces of 60 × 40 cm if you have taller ceilings

  • For a very narrow wall, two pieces of 45 × 30 cm in portrait

Photo ideas

  • Before and after renovation shots of your home

  • Two related travel photos, such as city and nature

  • Typography or quotes that fit the space

Hanging tips that apply to every layout

  1. Use a measuring tape, not eyeballing.
Mark the centre point of your wall and of each canvas before drilling.

  2. Keep a consistent gap.
For multi-canvas layouts, stick to one gap measurement (for example 6 cm) between all pieces.

  3. Check with painter’s tape first.
If you are unsure, tape paper cut-outs at the intended sizes to the wall. Step back and make adjustments before hanging the real canvases.

  4. Align with furniture, not ceiling.
Your eye reads the relationship between canvas and sofa, or canvas and headboard, before it reads the distance to the ceiling. Use furniture as your anchor.

When to go beyond these templates

These three layouts will solve most situations. Step outside them only when:

  • You have a very large feature wall with no furniture

  • You want a true gallery wall of many small pieces

  • You are working on a commercial space with very specific branding

In those cases, it often helps to sketch or ask for a mock-up.

For a typical Singapore home though, a single hero, a triptych or a vertical pair is more than enough. Simple, clean and easy to hang.
