Many customers ask if a single canvas can make enough impact in a typical 4-room HDB living room. The short answer is yes, if you pick the right size and image.
This case study walks through one real-world example, with details anonymised but measurements kept accurate.
1. The starting point
-
4-room HDB flat
-
Sofa wall width: about 2.4 metres
-
3-seater fabric sofa, light grey
-
Wall paint: warm off-white
-
No existing art above the sofa
The space felt neat but flat. The family wanted something personal, not generic art.
2. Choosing the image
The family shortlisted three photos:
-
A posed studio portrait
-
A candid shot of them walking along East Coast Park
-
A landscape from a New Zealand trip
We advised option 2:
-
Natural expressions
-
Strong leading lines from the path and trees
-
Enough background space to crop for different sizes
3. Deciding on size
We measured the sofa at 190 cm wide.
Using the 60 to 75 percent rule:
-
60 percent of 190 cm is about 115 cm
-
75 percent is about 140 cm
We suggested three possible sizes:
-
75 × 50 cm
-
90 × 60 cm
-
105 × 70 cm
Mock-ups over a photo of their wall showed that 75 × 50 cm felt a bit small, while 105 × 70 cm came close to the side walls.
The family chose 90 × 60 cm, which allowed comfortable breathing space on both sides.
4. File prep and wrap
The original file was 5568 × 3712 pixels from a DSLR, in sRGB, which was more than enough resolution.
We recommended:
-
Mirror wrap to keep all faces and feet on the front
-
Slight brightening and contrast adjustment for print
-
A very light warm tone to match their existing lighting
After a quick proof approval over email, we printed and hand-stretched the canvas.
5. Installation details
Hanging height:
-
Bottom of canvas at about 20 cm above sofa back
-
Centre of canvas at roughly 150 cm from floor, which is comfortable eye level
We provided a sawtooth hanger. The customer used wall plugs and screws suited for concrete walls.
Total time from drilling to canvas on wall: about 20 minutes.
6. The before and after
Before:
-
Large empty space above the sofa
-
TV wall carried all the visual weight
-
Living room felt more like a showroom than a home
After:
-
The family canvas became the visual anchor for the living room
-
Colours from the photo (blues and greens) tied in with cushions and rug
-
The room looked more complete even without any other decor changes
Because the print is 90 × 60 cm, it also reads well from the dining area and kitchen entry.
7. Key lessons you can borrow
-
For a standard 3-seater sofa in a 4-room HDB, 90 × 60 cm is a safe, impactful size for a single canvas.
-
Candid lifestyle photos often feel more natural than formal studio poses.
-
Mirror wrap is a good default when you have people near the edges of the frame.
If you are unsure what size to choose for your own living room, take a straight-on photo of your wall and note the sofa width. Send that together with your favourite photo and we can recommend sizes in the same way we did for this family.
