How To Clean And Care For Canvas Prints So They Last For Years

Canvas prints are low maintenance, but they are not zero maintenance. With a few simple habits, you can keep them looking fresh for many years, even in Singapore’s warm and humid climate.

Here is a straightforward care guide.

1. Where to hang, and where not to

Placement matters more than cleaning.

Good spots:

  • Living rooms and bedrooms with normal air circulation

  • Dining areas away from direct cooking fumes

  • Offices, corridors and reception spaces

Avoid:

  • Direct, harsh sunlight for many hours a day

  • Very damp spots such as directly above showers or very close to kettles and cookers

  • Areas where children can easily kick or press the canvas

Canvas will cope with normal humidity and air-conditioned rooms. Extreme, repeated moisture is the problem to avoid.

2. Regular dusting

Dust buildup dulls colours more than most people realise.

Simple routine:

  • Use a clean, soft feather duster or microfibre cloth

  • Dust lightly across the front and edges once a week or whenever you dust the room

  • Do not press hard or scrub

If you keep up with light dusting, deep cleaning becomes rare.

3. Handling fingerprints and light marks

Sometimes canvas picks up marks from handling.

To clean:

  1. Wash your hands and dry them fully.

  2. Use a slightly damp (not wet) clean microfibre cloth.

  3. Gently dab or wipe the affected area with minimal pressure.

  4. Let the canvas air dry.

Do not:

  • Use chemical cleaners, alcohol, window spray or furniture polish

  • Use rough cloths or sponges

  • Soak the canvas

If a mark is stubborn, it is better to leave a faint trace than to damage the surface with aggressive cleaning.

4. Keeping the canvas tight

Over time, any stretched fabric may relax a little.

Signs:

  • Slight ripples at the corners

  • The canvas sounds dull (not taut) when tapped lightly

If sagging is mild:

  • Often the canvas will tighten slightly when the room is less humid (for example with air-con on).

  • Some stretcher bars allow small wedges to be tapped in to increase tension. This should be done carefully.

If sagging is obvious and bothers you, contact the printer. They can advise whether re-stretching is possible or cost-effective.

5. Transporting or storing canvas prints

If you need to move or store your prints:

  • Keep them in their original protective wrap if available

  • Store upright, not flat under heavy items

  • Avoid leaning corners into hard edges that may dent the frame

  • Do not leave them in hot car boots for long periods

For longer-term storage, a dry, cool room is much better than a damp store or balcony area.

6. What about pests and mould

In very damp environments, mould can grow on almost any surface, including walls and canvases.

To reduce risk:

  • Keep rooms reasonably ventilated

  • Avoid hanging canvas directly on walls with known moisture problems

  • Use dehumidifiers in spaces that feel damp or musty

If you see signs of mould on canvas, this can be hard to treat fully without damaging the print. In many cases the safest solution is to replace the affected canvas after fixing the environmental cause.

7. Do canvas prints fade

All prints will eventually change slightly over decades. However, using good materials and sensible placement slows this down significantly.

At Canvas Craft we:

  • Use museum-grade canvas and pigment inks

  • Print on calibrated equipment

  • Build prints for indoor, normal-light use

Placed in a typical Singapore home or office, away from extreme sunlight, the print should remain stable for many years. Any changes will be gradual.

8. Quick care checklist

Every few months, run this quick check:

  • Is there visible dust on the surface

  • Are there any knocks or dents on the corners

  • Has the wall behind developed damp patches

  • Does the canvas still feel reasonably taut

If the answers are mostly fine, your canvases are likely in good health.

Canvas prints are designed to be enjoyed, not babysat. A bit of common sense about where you hang them and light, regular care is enough to keep them looking good for a long time.
